Felt Notes Industry 08.26
Why AI commercials?
AI commercials cost a fraction of traditional production, arrive in days instead of months, and can be versioned endlessly for testing. That is why nearly every ad buyer is adopting them. But the data also shows a trust problem: audiences can smell unguided AI, and it hurts brands. The winners in 2026 are not the teams that generate the most. They are the teams that direct what they generate.
How fast is the industry actually moving?
Per the IAB's 2025 Digital Video Ad Spend and Strategy report, 86 percent of ad buyers are using or planning to use generative AI to build video ad creative, and about half were already actively using it. The IAB found generative AI touched 22 percent of video ad creative in 2024 and projected roughly 40 percent by 2026. Cost efficiency is now the top cited benefit, named by 64 percent of respondents. In plain terms: AI commercials stopped being an experiment. They are becoming the default way video ads get made.
Do AI commercials actually perform?
When AI is used well, yes. A study from the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy covering 21,000 consumers found AI-personalized video ads outperformed personalized image ads by 9.4 percent on click-through rate and beat generic video ads by 6.5 percent. Speed compounds the advantage. A first cut in days means you can test three story directions in the time a traditional production schedules its first call.
So why do so many AI ads fail?
Because generating is not directing. Animoto's State of Video research found 78 percent of consumers trust videos featuring real people more than content they believe is AI-generated, and 36 percent of people who spotted AI content said it lowered their trust in the brand behind it. Wyzowl's 2026 data shows marketer satisfaction with video ROI fell from 93 percent to 82 percent even as adoption climbed. Producing a video got easy. Producing a good one stayed hard. Volume without taste pulled the average down, and audiences noticed.
What actually separates AI commercials that work?
Three things. A story with a beginning, a turn, and an ending, because structure is what audiences feel. Human direction over every frame, because taste is the only quality control AI does not ship with. And honest measurement afterward, because a beautiful film that did not move the numbers should change what you make next. This is the entire premise of our studio: the machine builds, a person directs, the audience decides.
Questions
Are AI commercials cheaper than traditional production?
Substantially. Industry analyses consistently find AI-assisted video cuts per-video production costs by well over half, which is why cost efficiency became the top cited benefit among ad buyers in IAB research.
Do audiences dislike AI-generated ads?
Audiences dislike ads that feel generated. Research shows trust drops when people spot unguided AI content, which is why human direction, real story structure, and taste in the edit matter more than the tool.
What share of video ads are made with AI now?
The IAB projected generative AI would touch roughly 40 percent of video ad creative by 2026, up from 22 percent in 2024.
